JD 4040 Oil in the Fuel System

Today i noticed alot of oil in the fuel system on my 4040 john deere. I'm not sure if it's motor oil or hydraulic oil but my guess would be motor oil according to the dipsticks. How would motor oil get into the fuel system? Headgasket?

This tractor has the 404 motor in it. Thanks

Just a thought but you could have then injectors pop tested to see if any are leaking.

A slim chance: Could it be coming from the mechanical lift pump? Diaphragm hole /crack on lift pump could be sucking engine oil in to pump them pumping into fuel system. It would have to be a leak just right so the diaphragm would act like a check valve allowing it to suck motor oil but to push fuel into crankcase.

ya the more i think about this the more my head hurts. Didn't know you could get oil in the fuel system. The lift pump might be a thing to check. Thanks guys.

Not the lift pump.

Fuel injection pump should have oil lube supply. At least the inline fuel injection pump does. Don't recall if the 4040 has a distributor type fuel injection pump. I know the ones on the 4020 engines don't use lube oil.

Are you making oil (fuel dilution)? If you are, then it can be the fuel injection pump, lift pump, or a worn out fuel injector leaking.

You could be right if its an inline pump. All my Deeres are distributor type and I don't have a 4040. Have a ford 1910 tractor that you have to drain the injector crankcase of motor oil when changing motor oil.

The 4040's don't have an inline pump.
The inline pump's are on the 4440's & up.

This should have a Rosamaster pump on it if I am thinking about the correct pump. If its just making oil.. I would stay check injectors. If you feel oil is getting into the fuel system, that is a tough call on a 4040. I believe that the 4040 Injection pumps are lubricated with diesel not oil. The 4430s etcs has a bousch style inline pump/

That's what I thought (4040 and 4240 has distributor pumps). I know the 4010 and 4020 pumps don't have lube oil, just wasn't sure if that changed on the later ones.

We only have two 4020s, a 4430 and a 4840 around here, for older tractors. The rest of the other big ones are 8 and 9000 series.
