What is the procedure to change fuel filters on a 1984 DT466

New to this forum and new to diesels, giving my International Harvester TD15 dozer a major tuneup, just want to make sure I get the procedure to change primary and secondary fuel filter change right before i do it.

The procedure is similar on most diesels.

Main thing is, do NOT pre-fill the secondary filter (unless you can completely block fuel from entering through the big hole in the center where it threads onto the base of a spin-on filter). I do tend to pre-fill the water/fuel separator filter though.

Does it use spin-on filters or, the metal/glass "can" type of filters that are held in place with a metal spring "clip"?

I changed filters before your reply, made a hell of a mess, diesel fuel everywhere. When I unscrewed the primary filter diesel just kept pouring until I got new filter in. Then I couldn't get the threads to align as diesel is pouring down my arm. I find out later that there is a valve below tank to shut off before changing filters.

Oh well live and learn.

What I do when I change filters is to do the primary first, and if you are doing the oil at the same time do the oil filter, and the greasing, when the new oil filter is on and new oil is in start the truck and run for 20 seconds, then shut it off, and change the secondary, I pre fill the filters, you have to have a clean container and fuel, but not filling them could cause a lot of problems you do not need. lots of people swear you must pump the secondary full, but if you ever did it on an early "E" you never did it again. By the time you get the filters changed you can check the oil.
