Its Harvest Time

Since it is the start of Almond Harvest I will post some pictures of equipment used, starting with the first step and equipment used and will progress with each step.

This is a 2012 COE Almond shaker. Powered by a John Deere 6068 engine. We can shake 4 to 6 trees per minute, typical is 5+ per minute. It as a computer controlled system that you can program what rpm the engine revs up to when you start shaking the tree, how many seconds of shake time (curently using 2.6 seconds of actual shake time) then it automatically unclamps(1.4 seconds of unclamp time) the head from the tree, then drops the rpm back to base setting for driving up to next tree.
In this picture You can see(thru the dust sweeper brushes in front of tires, they sweep the nuts to side of tire so you don't run over them.

So Mike do you have to sweep up your nuts with a broom and dust pan or do you have an implement that does that? I have worked a lot of Farm Equipment but have seen nothing like that. I would enjoy pictures of all of your stuff Mike.
Heres to a great harvest, as I am sure it will be better than ours here at home.

If I had to use brooms and dust pans the national unemployment rate would be 0.01%
More pictures to come, I will post each step of the process over the next several days.

Here is more pics of shaker.

1st pic is coolers, opened for cleaning. The twin electric fans are for the air to water intercooler.
2nd pic is the cab.
3rd is the engine compartment looking from the rear of machine.
4th is the side view of the working end. The white head/clamp is what clamps onto the trunk of the tree then shakes the tree by 2 sets of off balance weights driven by hydrostat. around 60 and 80 lbs of weights stacked to one side of a driven pulleys, 24" in diameter, turning in opposite directions.
Last pic is nuts on tree just before shaking.

Next day or so More pictures coming of next step in process of harvesting Almonds.
We are shaking the "he*L" out of the almonds and they become "Amonds" .....sorry thats an almond farmer joke

How is the harvest looking? Plenty of nice sized almonds or am I going to have to start squirreling them away?

We are producing a heavy crop this year....... that means its going to be a long cold winter so you better buy and stock up on them so you can "squirrel them away" for the winter.
At least we are not in a drought this year and have water compared to other years. I know what the middle of the country is going through with no water and feel for you guys.

Next step after shaking

After shaking the almonds on the ground we blow the nuts out of the tree rows and then follow that with a sweeper that windrows the nuts in the middle of the row.

1st pic: 3 point blower on Kubota 9540 tractor. Shop built: Brush guard cab, front end wheel brush attachment and custom skinny wheels. 11R-22.5 truck tires on rear and 6.50-10 front tires off of forklift. Skinny tires are used to keep narrow foot print to avoid running over nuts. rotary brushes in front of tires sweep nuts out of tire path.

2nd pic showing tractor working blowing nuts.

3rd pic rear view of blower on tractor

4th pic showing nuts blown out of tree row away from the tree.

Sweeping Nuts

Next step is Sweeping nuts into a windrow down middle of tree rows.

1st pic is sweeper in action. Powered by John Deere 4045, 80Hp engine, hydrostat drive. The sweeping mechanism is basicilly a large auger lying in the ground turning in reverse against foward motion. The Flights alternate with rubber flights and wire rake teeth(about 1/2" spacing between wires). As driving forward and the auger driving against forward motion the nuts are agered to the side and disharged. The Red rotary brush seen to the side helps pull any remaing nuts close to the tree into the auger head. The brushes also prevent damage to the tree and do not pull out the sprinkler hose and sprinklers.

Last pic shows the windrow of nuts, leaves and grass, ready for picking up.

Yes there is a lot of dust. Air cleaners are over size then whats standard for the engines on shaker and sweeper. The must be blown out daily, never touch the inner backup[ filter. Once dirt gets to the inner filter then new filters are installed. Also the radiators and coolers need to be blown out daily.

More to come ....later....
