John Deere 6068

About a year ago I had the JD dealer rebuild (valve job, pistons/liners, bearings etc.) a turbo 6068 engine that came out of a airblast orchard sprayer. Got it back, reinstalled it and had a Deere mechanic out to check it out on the first starting to make sure all is well and protect myself for any possible warranty issues.

Late last summer it started having a miss when cold and JD replaced 2 injectors and it was better. As time went on it started having blow-by and more missing etc., but had to keep going. Had JD out to look it over and said keep going until I finished spraying and it would be covered by warranty.

Kept getting worse on miss and hard starting but finally finished and towed it to the dealer. Found what you see in pic. Piston #6 had the hole and all 5 others showed valves hitting piston. This is at 800 hours after the rebuild, and this engine pretty much runs at 2200 rpm all the time, full load.

What is strange is None of the valves were bent, the timing was checked before tear down and was spot on. They have been checking every part number in the kit that was used in the rebuild and every part number is correct for the engine serial #. Deck height and head height is all within specs.

So far its a mystery what caused it. Good news is John Deere is standing behind their warranty

Glad they stood by the warranty and curious what caused it.

The Deere ran on 5 cylinders... their new MDS for fuel economy but it was blowing/dripping oil like a 2 stroke Detroit
I was nervous initially that I would have a fight on the warranty but it doesn't look like it. If we ever figure out the mystery, I will post.

Looks like the valves were either a touch too early opening or a touch too late in closing.

That's what I thought. But they claimed the timing was correct and it still has the original cam. I wasn't there for the tear down so maybe the mechanic is doing a CYA and "claiming" it was correct, who knows?

Engine is back, installed and working.

The dealer still couldn't come up with a definitive answer for the cause. They did ask if it ever got hot, specificaly the oil temp, because pistons showed high temp colors. They thought the pistons might have stretched enough to hit the valves I didn't ask them if they measured the piston height Told then and they know it has murphy guages for low oil pressure, high water temp and low water level in radiator.

Said it was possible AFTER the holes in piston because of extreme blowby from crankcase and blowing oil out and oil getting low. They told me to go ahead and run it to finish up the spray job as the damage was already done to the engine.

Waiting for the final answer from higher ups if they are going to cover it under waranty, All indications is they will...but I got the engine back and no bill was handed to me

The piston with the hole in it I would be looking at the upper rod bushing, I would also be looking at the piston height to the block, if the block was resurfaced, it is not normal to have a piston hit a valve, and seeing as it is in a tractor doubt it was from overspeed?
Cam timing, wrong rod length, to much off the deck height, broken or weak valve springs, or overspeed. that is about it for valves, hitting a piston.
Just a thought!
