Question for the tractor gurus

My buddy has a 966 with 2 six volt batteries . Went out to start it, and nothing not even a click. We put the charger on in for about 30 min still nothing . Checked the batteries they are hot . I know anything about these tractors is there a solenoid that goes bad , something common that goes out ? Heck I couldn't even find the starter , but it was cold didn't look to long .

Blown fuse or bad breaker? Power getting from the key switch/push button to the starter solenoid in start position?

If the batteries are hot, was the charger set for 12v and not 6v like it should have been? It is best to charge batteries individually with a charger. Not hooked up together in the group. Water levels OK, if not maintenance-free? If you still run a generator and not an alternator, you need batteries that allow you to add water.

Terminals and ground connections all clean?

Broken cable or one of those worthless, cheap, junk bolt on clamps with straps?

Bad key switch/push start button?

1 or both batteries junk?

Starter toast?

I'm gonna move this to the appropriate section.

That being said, clutch safety switch, key switch, push button for starter, blown fuse or relay. Even with weak batteries you should get a grunt out of the starter.

turn on ignition MAKE SURE ITS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL and cross the hot on the starter with the ground with a screwdriver or bolt. If it fires you know the batteries are fine and your ignition switch went out or has a loose wire. Another way to check batteries would be to put jumpers or charger directly to starter. Thats all I can think of without seeing it. Be careful with hot batteries because I have seen them explode.

Is the tractor in Park? Just a thought? Also, is the throttle body OK. I know you have to have the thottle pulled far enough ahead to engage and fire. Otherwise its something with the starter possibly? All the connections are OK? Let us know what it was.

Sorry bout the post in the wrong place . Found the problem . The starter switch was all corroded. Cleaned it and she fired right up . I have another question , the battery on the right side tested low , so I put the charger on it . Didn't help , the battery on the left side tested good ?? Put the charger on it and she fired right up . Is the one on left mainly for starting ? Thanks guys !!

They both are used to start the tractor.

Just keep in mind, that both batteries need to be replaced. Don't just change one. Shortens the life of the new battery, if you only replace one of them.

Glad you got it figured out. As for the batteries, they are both used equally for starting. What you are experiencing is most likely the right battery has plates that are shorted out and it is draining the left battery. Also causing the loss of 12 volts. So when you put the charger on the left battery it is picking up the difference. Those batteries are hooked in a series to make 12v, so when one goes bad you no longer have 12v to the starter. You need to replace both batteries.
