diesel backhoe

We have a 580ck loader backhoe. It's been running great, till today. We were loading some rock and it stopped running. It will start, but won't run. If we are using the hydrolics, it runs. That's the only way it will run. I don't understand how moving the buckets keeps the engine running, but if you don't move one of the buckets it quits. Please help me understand what's up with it.

I would guess that there is something wrong with the hydraulic system. My first thought would be that when you're not using any hydraulics, the fluid should flow back to the tank on its own. Maybe somehow that flow is obstructed so the hydraulic pump can't push it any more and it stalls the engine out. We had some hydraulic lines that were hooked up wrong on a front end loader so when you tried to steer it it would stall it out. Got the lines hooked up right and fixed the problem. You'd have to trace the lines and see how the oil gets back to the tank if it isn't used. I'm thinking theres some type of valve it goes through that's not working right.

I am guessing that a Case backhoe has an open center hyd. system, meaning the pump is always pumping fluid and there is always fluid returning to the sump. My guess is there is a blockage in the return lines apparently right at the loader control valves.

Will operating the hoe controls also allow it to run?

Doesn't sound like an engine problem to me, and not being familiar with Case hoes, I can only give basic info. Sorry.

If the pressure line runs from the pump to the control valves, bypassing the valves to the tank with a hose will prove the malfuction in the valve. Probably a plugged screen or damaged chevron/o-ring. The pressure relief valve is stuck or it would run and make noise, there may be damage to the pump drive from the overpressure of stopping the engine. Be sure to check the hydraulic fluid and the bottom of the tank for 'stuff', cut the filter to see the element - clean a spot with brake cleaner to look at with a 30x or higher microscope.

To much time....

You may have to drill and tap the pressure relief plug to get it out of the bore, I don't know the location, I haven't done farm/industrial equipment in quite a while. Most of the stuff is the same as on wreckers.
