f350/250 diesel: 12v Engine running "feed"

Im trying to find a 12v(+) "engine running" feed for a battery
isolator relay.

I picked up one of the wires off the alternator, but when
i use that signal the alternator light (on the dash turns on).

Can anyone recommend what wire to use ?

We use the "P" lead (or terminal) with a resistor in series with the relay coil. This limits the current draw and maintains sufficient voltage for operation of a tachometer. Be mindful this is AC voltage. Some relays may require a diode and a LC circuit for proper operation.

Our system controls current to a trailer feed and includes a current limiter.

My apologies. I realized after posting my above suggestion you probably have a 6G alternator installed which doesn't have a "P" or phase terminal. If you are so inclined you can connect a lead to one of the stator/diode connections and use that signal to operate a relay, i. e. Hella Type 4RD or Bosch equivalent. We've found this signal is about 7 V rms (half wave) and will activate the relay without any rectification or filtering. There are some other methods, but this approach is the simplest.
