A Galaxy 66 is a darn good radio, if you get it tuned by someone who knows their stuff you can get upwards of 80W. I like it 'cuz I don't need an amp and it is a very robust radio. Make sure you get your antenna tuned.

I have a Cobra 29 WX NW St. I absolutely love this radio, properly tuned this radio will GET OUT!!! Has Weather band, P.A.,Fully iluminated display,40 channel, and dimmer control. If I remember correctly I paid $140 for it. if it were to die tomorrow I would buy another.

Conex 33HP is one of the best radio out there. Big $$$ though. A Cobra 25 peeled and tuned will also kick a** for about $50.00 + tuning.

Bang for the buck.... The Cobra 29 or Uniden PC78 is extremely hard to beat. If you need a smaller radio to fit in a particular area, the Cobra 25 or Uniden PC68 has equal performance to the bigger brother with a smaller chassis. The only significant difference is the lack of an SWR meter. There are a few other changes, but that is the main one.

The Galaxy or Connex or any other flavor of "Export" radios are nice, but they are pricey and don't really give enough of a performance boost to justify the price. You could buy a Cobra 25 and a small amplifier for what it would cost for a Galaxy and the Cobra setup would stomp the Galaxy every time. It wouldn't even be a contest. However, the Galaxy style setups are nice if you have other friends with them. They have additional frequencies that can be quieter when skip is running and you can have more distant conversations with your friends.

Good luck deciding!

As with most radios (CB, VHF, etc), money is best invested in the antenna first and then the radio. A $500 radio still isn't worth crap with a $5 antenna but a $50 radio can work very well with a high quality antenna.
