Problems straight piping an 07 6.0

I had a 7.3 when I was younger and had no problems straight piping that truck, but I'm concerned about straight piping this 07 6.0.... Will it trip any codes i.e. the check engine light? Do I need a programmer before I straight pipe it? What programmers have other 07 6.0 owners used? Thanks for your input!

Straight piping will not set a cel. It will also give you lower egt's. SCT tuner is the way to go for a 6.0L, and with custom tuning it's even better. If your not studded (arp head studs) then stay conservative on the tuning. The SCT tuner tunes not just the engine, but the automatic transmission too, so the shifting will match the power levels.

Best thing you can do though, is purchase yourself a ScanGaugeII and learn to monitor the 6.0 vitals.

What would be the big difference in the sct vs something like the bully dog? Where would I get tunes for the sct? Or do I create the tune on my computer? Another question is EGR? Do I delete it or keep it ? Is it something easy to take out? And finally you mentioned "studded" I know what you mean by that, my question is how easy of a job that is? Thanks for your input, anything else I should know about the 6.0 before I start in on it?

Bully Dog was purchased by SCT earlier this year, but I wouldn't expect SCT's tuning or support by SCT Custom Tuning Dealers for the Bully Dog hardware anytime soon. Your best bet is a mild tow tune (40-60hp) for longevity from a reputable custom tuning vendor.

You can pretty much do whatever you like post turbo and be ok. I strongly recommend keeping the catalytic converter and other emissions systems functional though. The cat won't pose a restriction on power if you throw some heat at it regularly, meaning get on the throttle and hold it there up a long on ramp or up a hill. The same is actually good for the VGT turbo also. Check the health of your EGR and oil coolers by monitoring oil and coolant temps, lots of documentation on that with a little searching here. Final thing, don't mess with the air intake system. The stock filters are beyond excellent, needing only to be changed when you see an actual measurement of restriction on the filter minder. Stock filters seem to run anywhere from 50k to 150k miles depending on where you are before needing replacement, only use Ford Motorcraft or Donaldson filters, which are what came from the factory, cheaper filters will not last as long or filter any better, and there is no performance to be had from additional flow.

IF and only if you are 100% certain your Head gaskets are perfectly intact you could do studs 1 at a time - meaning pull one head bolt and replace with a stud in the torque sequence.

The proper way is to pull the heads have them checked machined, put new OEM HG on and stud it. I did 1 at a time and have had no issues. My thread is ARP 1 at a time.

Emission compliant is a touchy subject these day's with the EPA cracking down on the tuner industry. Edge Products got a hefty fine and then some in recent past as well a HHS Products company too, they are under investigation as well. Below is some excerpts from an article...

In a court settlement with the EPA, Edge Products, a manufacturer of electronic power modules for diesel engines, has agreed to pay a $500,000 fine for manufacturing and selling electronic devices that allowed owners of Chevy, GMC, Ford and Dodge/Ram diesel pickup trucks (2007 and later) to remove the programming for diesel particulate filters from their vehicles.

The Ogden, Utah, company is reported to have sold more than 9,000 units from January 2009 through April 2011. This is said to have resulted in an estimated 158 tons of excess particulate matter emissions — the equivalent of 422 new long-haul semitrailers operating for 29 years, according to the EPA.

The civil penalty of $500,000 is based on the United States’ determination that Edge Products has a limited ability to pay a penalty in this matter.

In addition to the fine, Edge Products is required to offer to buy back the devices. To sell the device back to the company, the truck from which the device came must be returned to its original factory programming. Edge Products is also required to spend at least $157,600 to implement an emission mitigation project to offset the excess particulate matter emissions it caused.

First get a ScanGaugeII and program in the X-Gauge features for the 6.0L Diesel...

If all is well after monitoring the EOT / ECT / FICM / ICP / IPR / VGT / and no current fault codes then consider either doing a FICM rollback tune or an SCT tuner.

If you do end up needing an EGR cooler and or oil cooler, then consider the options of going in and doing ARP's with factory head gaskets and EGR upgrade or delete. Also upgrade the hi-pressure oil system STC fittings and dummy plugs and stand pipes while it's apart.

If you need to stay emission compliant, then do an upgraded egr cooler from BulletProof Diesel...

And yes, doing headgaskets with ARP's is a big job. Most remove the cab off the chassis for better access, or remove the engine for better access.

There are options for performance enhancement and reliability upgrades. One option is to stay emission compliant, the other is to go outlaw by deleting egr, straight piping with 4in system, custom tuning for track use.

Great info

Thanks for the help, I ordered a scan gauge 2... Hopefully everything is good! Will it tell me what normal temperatures and presure should be? Or just advise if I'm outside of the comfort zone? Next I'll do an exhaust if scan gauge dosent show any problems! Thanks again!

The ScanGaugeII will give live readings of sensor and actuator data once you have programmed in the X-Gauge command features for the 6.0L Diesel.

Once monitoring is live, it's up to you to decide which 4 readings you want to view and monitor at a time, and you can scroll through and change them to suite your needs as your driving or before you start driving.

I'll get back with you later on what the normal actual value ranges should be for various readings...got to go to work now.
