why the engine change?

I am starting to look at the Dodge diesels and was wondering why they changed engines in 2007.5. If the 5.9 got better gas mileage was more reliable and was such a great puller. Why change to the 6.7?
Just a couple of questions I had. Thanks

I think the main reason was for meeting emmision standards. Needed more cubic inches to make up for the loss of power the smog junk caused. At least the Hp and torque went up and we finally got a 6 speed auto with it.

... in 04.5- trucks the cam was reground to allow for some built in EGR but was not enough alone to meed the 2010 standards for working with a DPF. The main reasons mike stated about and the more restrictions in exhaust flow meant they need more Cubic inches to get the power for the emission standards.

I have read on the forum about people putting in extra oil in the fuel tanks at fill up i just assumed it was because the 6.7 was designed to run on the low sulphur fuel. Is this true?

Don't do it if you still have your dpf, adding oil to the diesel will plug it up fast!

Yes the 07.5 is designed to run on ultra low sulfur diesel. No need to add the oil.

I guess I will have to figure out what i want. I like the fuel mileage of the 5.9 and since i dont pull that much that is my main concern.

I went from a 2001 Ram 2500 cummins auto w/3.55s to my 6.7 auto w/ 3.73s both autos. The 68RFE is a much better auto trans then even the stock 48RE in the CRs. The only dept my 01 was better was mileage, as it got 18-19 city with only a 4in TBE and CAI. I have my 6.7 tuned and can pull 18 city pretty easy but Im only running a 40hp tune on stock timing. If you are going to leave it pretty stock then go 5.9 CR with out a doubt since towing is not your main concern. The 6.7 shines towing in stock form. They had issues when they came out but I have not heard of many issues with the 2010s. if I had it to do over I think I would really try to find an 06/07 5.9 CR and chance the need for a built 48RE, but man the 6.7 is a beast towing. overall I am very pleased with my 6.7 and even have thought about going to a 5.9 gear jammer, but the money has me so Im keeping my 6.7, if your looking at used rigs, I my self would look for a 5.9 in the above years I listed, but if you want a beast of a tow rig, the 6.7 when upgraded is where it is at. just be prepared to mod it and go from there. Both are great rigs and you wont go wrong with either.

Thanks very much for the info. I would probaly go for a 2 wheel drive and other than upgrade in air filter and maybe a light tune and simple stuff like that it would be stock. Thanks again/

Just a warning about tuning, even with a light tune on a DPF can cause at minimum more regens thus lowering MPG. They have even been known to cause DPFs to crack and no longer work correctly. Just a little fyi. As I said before both rigs your looking at are good rigs, but both have good and bad points. Your on the right track. keep us posted.
