Exhaust Brake ?

Just got back from camping on the coast. Going there towing my 5er weighing 12,000+ lbs my EB started surging one time. It was on a 8% down hill grade and was in 3rd gear. It was a rapid surge of on and off of 1 second or less. I momentarly got one the throttle to disengage the EB then all was fine. Never did it again. This trip has grades of up to 10% and did not act up any more.

Question: Is this how the Variable vanes in the turbo start acting if they are sticking? I am completly stock, 85,000+ miles and all flash updates done. Turbo never has been cleaned for sticking like many of you have had done. Hopeing it was a one time thing since it hasn't done it anymore.

It could have just been a small peice of soot stuck in it. I wouldn't worry to much if it worked the rest of the trip. Do you run it all the time?

I run it about 50% of the time when not towing.

mike run it all the time for the next tank of fuel and then get a load on it. If it is still not acting up I'm betting it was a fluke.

I run mine all the time, and have had that same situation a few times. A little surging then fine, I always figured it was just gunking up a little then cleared up to run fine. I wouldn't worry to much, mine has also never been cleaned at 50,000 miles.
