Calling out ynot??? or whoever wants a shot

Over this potential head gasket issue. Its being discussed on here but mainly on CF. But ill explain so the truck is basically pushing coolant into my resevior loaded and only normally during hot weather but in my opinion not sucking it back in a timely manner (maybe me worrying to much) example left IN to ID rad was full and overflow was at cold level pulled a 36ft 5th wheel heavy13-15k at 65-70mph all the way few spots are 55 not many. The temp outside was prob 70-80 not to bad the water level did not move a 1/4 in untill i went over the Sisters in WY by Evanston then from Evanston she rose maybe 2in to Eden Idaho. Then i unload and head back to In to get a load going to Houston TX so i get loaded did exact same thing made sure rad was full and overflow was at cold level and then left it was hot and only got hotter going to down to TX made it to bout 90mi left and she got hot. Temp went to 225-235 so i pulled over to see if it would cool down and also my clutch fan kicked on and i looked at the water level it had rose bout 6-8in from IN to TX boarder and temp was around 90-95 it did not actually boil over but to close for comfort it has boiled over twice but those 2 times it did not register hot. Temps run ok bout 190 empty and between 190-200 depending on hills loaded. So i have changed numerous thermo stats, and rad caps as of now they have factory oem installed. i have flushed my coolant and rad the best i can and put new fluids in and i changed my hose from overflow to rad thinking it might be collapsing on me during pulls and i have replaced all other hoses top and bottom. I prob have for got to mention something to you but i could use your advice you seem very intelligent in the heavy duty section this is smaller so should be walk in the park for ya. So do you actually think it is a head gasket??? Oh and i have been informed this truck has a multi layer gasket and since this all started ther has now been over 45k of loaded miles and it had not gotten worse truck is an 07 Dodge Cummins 6.7l Thanks again

Soot,
Just wondering does your coolant temp drop after reducing load on engine such as after cresting a hill. The reason I ask is today coming home towing my 5th wheel(12,000lbs) was climbing a 10% grade in 2 and 3rd gear because of the 15 - 20 mph curves. Outside temp was only in the 60's but my temp climbed to 220-225 and fan kicked on which I think was because of the slow speed and not enough air over radiator. After over the top of grade, temp went down and fan disengaged. Of course I never stopped to check water level and I never have added water to radiator except when water pump went out.

I know you have been fighting this issue, hopefully its not a big deal.

It doesnt take long, but i would have the head decked for true and that takes time. Prolly 16 hrs you could have it off and back on in that time. I did a 12v in 12hrs id say but we did not have the head surfaced. For what Brandon is doing I would with out a doubt have the head sent to a machine shop. I would also look at doing ARP 625s and possibly a EGW or an aftermarket turbo to get the drive pressures in check. The stock VGT does not run at a 1.1 ratio.

Ya it does basically wat you just described to me wat yours did. I think the biggest reason im not going to change the hg is due to the fact of if i do and wat if it was not the problem in first place....I will just continue to drive it normally and monitor fuel mileage, temps, and water usage bout all i can do cause im just tired of it nickel and diming me to death lol. It just sounds like a problem child as my dad was saying other night caould be one of those no matter how much money you throw at it wont help so i better get to choppingwood so i can have a new truck

OK bud. First thing is to do a bottle test. When you pull a hard grade with a big load, especially if the fan kicks on, immediately pull over and pull the overflow tube off the reservoir, stuff it in a clear soda bottle 3/4 full of water, plug off the inlet in the reservoir, rev it up a couple times if you can, and look for bubbles. If it has bubbles, pull the head. If it doesn't, check the rad with a heat gun for cross flow, should be 18 to 25* dif. If it's less than that thermostat is stuck. If it's more rad is plugged. Before messing with the heat gun fixes, check water pump pressure. Spec should be in the book or someone will post it. My books are stored away. If pressure is low, check the hoses for a collapsed hose first, then think about pullin the water pump and check the impeller for erosion and a lose press fit. That should get you started
