Trans Fluid

I'm looking at changing my transmission fluid here in the next weekend or two. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he mentioned that he has heard multiple times that when the fluid is changed after roughly 50k miles the new fluid acts like a solvent and destroys the transmission. While he specifically mentioned this happening to a Chevy that he had worked on, he said that he has heard of it more than once. Can anyone out there tell me if this is true or just a rumor? On the one hand I know I need to change my fluids, but on the other I'm not looking to have to buy a new tranny due to a fluid change...

By the way its a '08 Ram 2500 Mega Cab 4x4 auto, with roughly 70k on it.

I have never heard of that. If that was so, manufactures wouldn't have oil changes in there maintence schedules. I have 105,xxx miles, 2 trans oil changes and no problems.

Agreed, I thought it sounded just as crazy. Just figured I'd tap the great resource at hand in the off chance that it held any water, before I destroyed a tranny.

This is my opinion and just that, but if its gonna go its gonna go, changing the fluid is not going to determine the fate of the tranny.. ( by if you change it, its going to fail.) I have heard this.. My fluid was changed at 10k so at 55-60k I will change fluid and add mag hytec pan.

I think your fine changing the fluid..

I have never heard of this either, the fluid in the trans is just like motor oil, it needs to be changed periodically other wise too much contaminants can get into it and it will be more harmful than not changing it

It really wasn't bad. The cooler lines get in the way of a few of the bolts, and one of mine was already rounded out. I took the advice from some other posts and left the o-ring for the sump filter in place. It looked fine and there was a storm coming on fast. The only two things I would have done differently would have been to get a mag-hytec for this time and to make sure I ordered my ATF ahead of time. Autozone magically only had quart bottles, but the easy funnel or whatever it is that Geno's sells helped tremendously.

Isn't it weird that you posted this, and now your transmission is toast? AND- you just changed your fluid... That sucks...

Yea it sucks! I changed it every 50,000 miles and put the Mag Hytec pan at the first change. When I changed it the oil was still bright red and no burnt smell to it. I know it never ran hot. The trans shop says it probably is just a fluke as this is only the 2nd one they have had to a do a rebuild on. The first thing the shop asked me is if I had a Chip in it......Nope, completly stock.

As I find out more I will post it.
