Cummins question

Is the "Cummins" the company name or is it the design of the engines. I know of a "Cummins" in just about every form of industrial equiptment. Are they ALL of the same design or ALL just made by a company called Cummins?

AND are all the Cummins engines in-line 6 cylinders?

An old boy by the name of Clessie Cummins started the company. He did most of his own design work and invented the Jacobs engine brake. The Cummins Engine Company board of directors told him the brake would never work. So, he sold the patent to Jacobs Manufacturing company and helped them develop it. The first testing in a truck using the engine brake was done on a hill coming down into Lake Tahoe where I lived in the early 1960's. They used a Sheldon Oil Company asphalt tanker.

I can't see Cummins replacing the I-6 for a different engine design.
The ISB has such a rich history.
Look at all the Dodge Rams with over 500,000 Miles on them, and even some with a Million Miles. Mine has over 200,000 and runs like a dream.

This is from another post, Cummins is testing a motor as a possible powerplant for the 1500, it is a V8 5.6Liter 32V DOHC with aluminum heads. They are also developing a companion motor that is a V6 with the same bore. The V8 should be released with the 350/550 rating it has now, and the V6 if released should have 270/400, both have a redline of 5000RPM.
