Believe the new trucks still have the Gertrag G-56 in them like the 5.9's of later years had.

Thanks Patriot.

Have there been any issues with this tranny?

no, the g56 is made by Mercedes Benz. The only fault you'll really find with the tranny is the weak dual mass flywheel. If your going to add ANY power or haul big, you'll want to upgrade the clutch to a good aftermarket one.

Exactly , it`s made by mercedes. I had problems with it in the first 1000 miles..... Rusted bearing probably installed like that right from assembly line. Tranny was rebuilted from A to Z and to make me happy the dealer even put a new clutch , flywheel and clutch hydrolic in....why? don`t know . Dual mass is probably not enought for a dually if your pulling really heavy loads but in my case it is more than enought so far.

Thanks for the information fellas.

I'm thinking of buying a Dodge. Never thought I would buy anything other than a Ford.

Oh man going from your Ford to a dodge would normally be a drastic down grade. . .
But in this case it would be an upgrade i have to admit !

Only way to get better is you'd have to mate the Cummins 6.7L with gertrag 6spd manual transmission then stuff that combo into a Quality GMC 3500 chassie with 4.88 gears and 245/70R19.5G tires Mudders of course.

Mike,

I'm open to suggestions, and willing to look at just about anything or any combination.

However, I've heard too many bad things about the front axle that they use on their 4x4 trucks. I've discounted the GM because of it.

Question for you though: If yer going with 4:88's and 245/70R19.5 tires, wouldn't you get pretty nasty mileage on the highway? I would think that a 4:10 should be more than enough.

Ford runs 4.33's n 4.88's with 225/70R19.5 tires.
Dodge/Sterling runs 4.44's n 4.56's with 225/70R19.5 tires.
the 245's are almost 2 inches taller. . .

with 4.88's and 245's you'll max out at about 85-90mph cruise comfortably about 70-75mph.
With 4.10's and 19.5 tires you'll be Lugging all the time doing you motor and trans harm as well as lowering you milage.
But to get 19.5's on new rig you'll have to get 4500+ or F450+

if you went with 4.10's and the 225/70R19.5's on a 3500 or F-350 you might be ok but its going to have more top end power then low end plus with 19.5's you can carry much heavier loads.

I know most who ran 19.5's not to carry more weight but to have longer tire wear Load range E 16's n 17's only last about 40-60K miles. 19.5's go about 70-90K miles.

16's n 17's come Load range C D E. 19.5's come in F G H. the least amount of the Max weight you use the longer the tires last. plus there a good bit taller and a little wider which also helps in crease tire wear.

19.5 Conversion:
http://www.ricksontruck.com/

His prices are bit high i would get your wheels n tires from a local truck shop to save money but the info is good.
Mounted up and aired up 225/70R19.5 = 32" 245/70R19.5 = 34" 265/70R19.5's = 35".

In my opinion the 255 is just for dueling the 245 can go both ways and the 265 is just for singles. . .But i have seen 225's singled and 265's dueled. . .

I'm not saying you have to run 19.5's on your truck, I just like to let guys with 8 n10 lug axles they can run 19.5's and save a lot of money in the long run. must people don't know about them so i try an help inform them.

I just figured with a diesel and man trans your going to be doing some heavy hauling so i was trying to help save you some cash down the road in tire maintaince. it might still cost some for the switch over as you'll need 4-6 wheel and 4-6 tires but once your switched over the money savings is great.

My 1962 GMC came factory with 5.13 gears and 19.5's i switched my 77 Ford over 10 years ago and haven't regretted it once. . .I'm considering switching my 95 GMC over as well. . .

when the 95 wears out i'm going to get a new truck it'll be a 1 ton diesel and i'll be converting to 19.5's for sure. if not right at purchase then right when the factory tires wear out.
