How long before meltdown

I took a trip this Memorial weekend from Phoenix to Gallup NM pulling our horse trailer which weighs aprox 18,000lb. Going up some of the hills my EGT's were anywher from 1350 to 1450. I know it is not good but how long is too long before damage occurs?

Aluminum melts at 1400* so if you hold that or near that too long It will happen.

Honestly I've heard a lot of different things on this. I've heard everything from 1300 - 1400 in short bursts is ok and anything over 1400 is bad period. I've also heard that the CR motor makes more heat by nature and therefore built to take more heat so you can run 1450 all day and anything over that is bad.

Me I err on the side of caution so I would say 1300 to 1400 is ok in short bursts but you don't want to sustain it for more than a few seconds.

Sounds like its time for some water injection or a new turbo. Check out http://www.snowperformance.net/products.php?p_cat=336 and look at the MPG-Max stage 3 kit for towing. That or a new turbo should cool you down.

He shouldnt need water meth. Im wondering how big the hills were and how long of a grade they were thats alot of weight for any hill. I mean he has the same mods as me and i have had 15,000 behind worth of big bales of hay and have hit that going up some hills back in MO. But water meth will help if your concerned bout it where is your egt probe located at?

The 6.7 can handle a lot more heat than a 5.9, this is due to the regen process. The motor as a whole is built to handle these conditions. That being said..... 1400 for long periods cant be good, but several guys i know have seen 1400 pulling hills while truck is in regen, totally stock. I hate seeing anything over 1200, but, with these trucks, it does happen.

For what he's doing I wouldn't even worry about meth. If I was in his shoes and worried about EGT's only I would just give it some water and call it good.

I was in the number 2 mode on the edge. These were 6% grades probably 1 or 2 miles long. I am not trying to race up the hills but I dont want to crawl up them at 35 mph either.

That sheds a little more light on the situation.....these turbos are just not built to give the engine enough air to keep it cool with any extra fuel. You'll either have to pull the hill on the stock setting or add water or a new turbo to keep it cool with that kind of load and any kind of programmer.
