A/C not cooling properly

Well it looks like a science experiment going haywire.........but I am trying to get some readings from the output of my A/C unit. I have felt that my A/C is just not cutting it, meaning it is not cooling to what it should be.

So today, I used a Fluke 87 IV meter with an 80K-A thermocouple and on the way home tonight, the vents were putting out a brisk 54*F. It was only 83*F outside, but it definitely wasn't cooling properly inside.

And the closer I got to home, the warmer it got, up into the lower 60s. Did a little test on recirc, and it went down to a record 53.5*F.

More testing will come, but long story short......she will be going back to the dealer soon.

I always run mine on recirc to the dash and floor vents. It blows colder because it is not having to cool the hot air coming from the outside.

Yes, the recirc will aid in cooling ONCE you have the cab temps down. But you still need the cab to get cooled down in order to do so. With mine only cooling to 54*F, it takes me 1/2 way home to get cool enough to use recirc. Plus it is fairly loud.

But it has only been an average summer, so the A/C should be able to handle working with the outside air.

My ole man said the reason my truck only had 20z of freon left in it was due to where the lines run ack into the cab there are orings inside that coupler and during hot and cold weather the orings expand and shrink cause the freon to leak out he said it may do it again or it may not ever do it again. I just now mine was not cooling at all and once we recharged it my vent temps got down to 42* perfect has worked fine since bout 4 months now and we had cold weather in that time to

Has he done any investigation himself (record vent temps, look at the line pressures, etc??)?

I have yet to hook up some gauges to check my line pressures.

Not that I know of... I think its out of warranty now (he's over the 36K). I mean it works, but on a hot day when going out to lunch with 4 dudes in the truck, it doesn't cool off fast enough like my truck does.

4rcFed i sent you a pm. the a/c on these megacabs can be fixed. i've personally done it to my own truck. i had mine in the shop after i purchased it, and the dealer said everything was within specs. the mega cabs need two things. first the rear air diverters removed. you will still get plenty of air to the back, and much more to the front vents. dealers know of this, and will do it if their going to be in there anyway. but the dash has to removed, so they won't warranty just removing the diverters. second, install heater core bypass valves. this drops the temps drastically on the a/c. why our trucks don't have one from the factory i'll never know. my ford's had heater core bypass valves from the factory. if you want more info on exactly what need to be done, let me know. the diverter removal is free if you do it yourself, but will take 4-6 hours as the dash has to be removed (pulled back). the bypass valves take 45 minutes and cost about $35, and everything can be purchased at your local hardware store.

Yep, got your PM- Thanks!!

I need to find some time that I can get the truck down to the dealer and checked out.

I have not been able to find the "specs" that they go off of. Once they told you things "were in spec," did they tell you what the specs are? I am very curious to know.............and see.

But I'll give them a chance at it before I cut into it.
