First transmission problems...

Driver hauling a load of trailers for us from here in northeast Texas to North Dakota said the transmission sometimes didnt wanna shift into 5th gear, and when they let it cool down for a while sometimes then it would work again... What do you think the problem could be? Transmission getting hot or some damaged parts? Truck is at around 226K miles or so by the way...

haha you do have a point there, but do you know what could be the problem with the transmission? just something temporary with the load or something more major?

It depends...when was the last time it was serviced? Did it get hot while pulling that load? If the fluid gets hot it will degrade the fluid and the transmission will not shift properly. This is also a sign there may be something starting to go wrong with tranny mechanically. If that tranny has lasted 226k then it's already done it's job and then some and is on borrowed time as it is.

Then it sounds like it's done 3x it's job already considering the loads we pull... and we had it serviced at about 200K and now the fluids were quite burnt again and some small metal shreds in the oil...

226k and the work the truck has done sounds impressive to me for the stock tranny to have held on that long. maybe dodge got it right this time.

He obviously wasn't driving through any states that give a dang... He would still be in jail here in Ga if the DOT would have pulled him over with that kind of weight.
