2008 question

currently have a 02 ford ps. looking at 08 ram 2500. diesel. all looked good until i looked under the truck. the exhaust has 3 "tanks" rear most muffler, next in line , middle tank i assume cat, front must be dpf. is this correct. short 6" pipe in front of front unit is wrapped in 2" wide nylon tow strap with clamps holding it on. i can only assume the pipe is cracked or rusted through. is this a common problem or just a fluke. also i read a review of the 08 ram which stated they came equiped with an exhaust brake.. was this standard or an option. how are these 6sp automatics holding up.

I would say the tow strap clamped on the exhaust is not a good thing.haven't heard of many troubles with the stock exhaust rusting that fast or breaking easily. They do come with factory exhaust brake, it works great. The auto tranny is holding up real well from most accounts. I think there is someone on here that runs a hotshot business with an auto with a ton of miles on it.

the dealer would have to do all the repairs on the exhaust before i got interested. my old 5.9 was a work horse. little leary of dodge with all the financial problems. probably wont be around for long. but i guess most everything could by handled by a cummins shop. and i think i read where ford is putting that same transmission in their 2011 power stroke. aisin i believe i read. thanks for the response. hesitant to take on new indebtness but also dont like having a 10 y/o vehicle.

The trannies in the 2500's and 3500's is the 6 speed 68RFE. The Aisin tranny only comes in the Cab & Chassis trucks, 4500 & 5500's.

the "tow strap" around the exhaust is to keep heat around the sensor that comes in the top side. It is due to code P2000 which is Nox filter below threshold. I would not worry about it to much,, it is actually like header tape. If you plan to do the DPF delete this would not matter.

so it is like the dpf running too cold. isnt there a fear of the nylon catching on fire. is there a perm fix for this. the truck otherwise is looking great. i knew there would be someone on here that knew what it was all about.

you are correct that sensor area is "cool" the best fix for all of the issues of the 6.7 is a dpf/ egr delete. this is done by running a programmer such as smarty or xrt and removing factory exhaust, the down side is loss of warranty and not passing emissions... also I have had the header tape on for aprox. 6k and no issues it smells hot once in a while but now real issues...

so just getting a roll of header tape to replace the nylon strap would be sufficient . sounds like a plan.

It should be header tape now if it was done correctly.
