Sanding ?

what grit sand paper should be used last just before one would clean for prep to paint? 1000?

maybe a list to start with and then get down to? I dont want to remove all of the paint but a fair share in spots to remove rust will happen, or is it best to just sand it all down equal? Im thinking about having the body fixed and have a friend paint it, im not 100% sure what im going to do yet.

Im thinking about having the body shop do it as well but i think that will cost alot ontop of the dedutable to have the body work done from insurance.

1000 with boards and blocks works. Have you primed? Prep makes all the difference. You will have plenty of sanding to do after you spray. Make sure it looks like glass before you clear it.

before you paint over primer you should sand with either 400 dry or 600 wet. 1000 might be too fine for paint to stick too. Clear will stick fine but sealer and paint need a bit more "scuff" for it to stick right. Dont be afraid to spend some time with 180 to get everything nice and straight and then work on the fine sanding later, you cant really block anything about with much finer than 180 because it wont knock off the high spots as well... its confusing so you might go to a good paint store and get some advice as you go...

DZ pretty much hit the nail on the head. To give you an accurate answer we would need a bit more detailed description as to what your are trying to do and what you are trying to accomplish. a good paint job is an art really and the final product is only as good as the prep job. there really isnt a " one step fits all applications answer.

Good call DZ. I need to paint a truck again. Sometimes this forum reminds me that skills are perishable.

Yeah its one of thoughs things that that you need alot of practice, and re-education for yourseft to hone your skills again, i try and do small jobs to keep my skills up but a big job is totally different than a small job, this is the last complete i did over 3 years ago, i learned ALOT because the truck was a pile when i started.

Nice looking rig. I have an upcoming project that might get some color but we will see how the 4x4 and SAS goes first.
