Towing with a tune?

'07 F-250 6.0PS
SCT Excellerator II Power Tune
MBPR Exhaust
Volant Cold Air Intake
No other mods

Empty I get close to 20 MPG at highway speeds.
Pulling our old camper that would drop to 10 MPG
I recently purchased a 5th wheel that tips the scales at over 11K pounds and my mileage dropped like a rock. Would I be better served to flash back to the stock tune when towing and only use the Power program for empty trips?

Thanks

Looks like you're towing about the same weight I do. Put it back to stock, hit the Tow/Haul button and let the truck do the job. Doesn't look like you have head studs yet, even with them, I have a tow tune that is primarily for the exhaust brake and nets me another 1/2mpg towing. I get 9-1/2 to 11mpg tank to tank and average out just over 10mpg. 11k is a lot of weight and a 5th wheel adds a lot of frontal area. Pull the tailgate off when your towing for a small bump in mpg, and slow down. Over 60mph towing massacres your fuel mileage.

The Current Truck (Oct-2013 to Present):

The one I'll miss, (Mar-2009 to Jan-2014):

Thanks Idaho, that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. If I can get somewhere close to 10MPG again I'll be jumping for joy.

P.S. Keep a happy thought. I was trapped in Tehachapi for almost three years. Escape is possible.

Idaho, you are the MAN!!! Just got back from a relatively short trip but, it had a LOT of steep climbs. Averaged just a hair under 10MPG for the trip and couldn't be happier. I was VERY worried that my MPG with the new trailer was going to limit my travels next year. Now we're back in action thanks to you. Much abliged. handshake

2 Stroker: I'd bet your total fontal area is about the same, maybe a little more than mine, and that combined with the additional 3000lbs is the difference in fuel economy. The angle of the front of the 5th wheel will make a small difference too, if you have a near vertical cap on the front of the trailer it can cost you 1/2 mpg vs. a sloped nose like what my Prowler was designed with.

Yes i have a high front on mine about a 6-6.5' bedroom and the newer 5er do hit the wind alot better. I just installed a Roll-N-Lock bed cover took a 500mile solo trip over to Sunriver for a week and got 1/2+ more per-gallon then we went to the coast for a week and got a little better mpg pulling by pulling the cover up to the hitch but the good part is everything stays dry and covered.
