egr deletes removes the egr cooler and stops exhaust gasses from being recirculated back into the intake system. this has many benefits for you engine; more oxygen, keeps intake manifold and turbo cleaner, lowers egts, and eliminates egr cooler and valve failures which can cause puking coolant out the degas bottle.
IMO the best time to do this is if you are already "inside" the engine, for example doing head studs or new turbo.

the EGR cooler looks good on paper when it was designed but its pretty much a fugged up system that fails more times than not. its definitely better to get rid of it than to keep it on the truck if your planning to modify the truck and add power. and if you get rid of it, that is one less thing you have to worry about failing

Just did the EGR cooler on my buddy's '06 F-350 4x4 Dually. It's quite a job, plan on a full day and a sore body. We couldn't get a delete kit as cheaply as a new cooler, so we got a cooler kit and plugged it. The cooler kit was like $380 and the plug was $0.76!

The truck is completely stock aside from a 4" cat back. The plug in the new EGR cooler has proven to be worth over 1 mpg!

I do still need to pull the up pipe and remove the scoop from it, but it hasn't seemed to be a problem.

The truck I did th cooler on is a Tow Boss package truck with 4.30s front an rear. Mileage has always been 12 towing, 13 empty on the mountain roads and highways where he lives, and 13 towing 14 empty on long Interstate trips. He's npw getting a solid 14 empty and got 13 towing 5500-6000lbs or windows through the mountains. My buddy that owns the truck is a 73 year old general contractor with a lead foot! That truck never gets driven the posted speed limit, he's got the speeding ticket to prove it.
