Straight Pipin it

Ok so Id like to say first off im really poor... lol like really poor. I am a college student with hardly any money and I work my butt off just to pay for my awesome truck, and Carpentry has been slow and the odd jobs kinda suck too. So with that being said I have a buddy tht can weld and we have a peice of 3.5 inch piping and I wanted to know if choppin out my muffler and welding that into place wud hurt anything. Other then it not being to DOT regulation and possible gettin me a ticket will it hurt my truck? I know theres guys on here that have strait piped 4inch exhaust will the same be ok for the 3.5? If I had the money Id have a nice MBRP exhaust but 500 bucks just isnt in the cards right now.

Also will the truck sound better strait piped with the stock size then it does with the muffler now? I like the loud redneck rumble... I dont no many diesel guys that dont...

Am I gonna be blowing black smoke everywhere? I dont mind a little bit here and there (I actually think its kinda cool) but I live in Melbourne Beach the cops here suck and I am not trying to totally push my luck.

With a straitpipe the engine shud breath a little better too right? Will I get performance gains at all since I am just doin a 3.5inch muffler chop?

My check engine light will throw a o2 sensor fault wont it? Thats ok tho and shouldnt hurt anything right? Is there a way to stop that or should I just ignore it?

I hope these questions dont seam to dumb for you all but this is the place to ask cuz you guys know your sh*t so please let me know if the strait pipe/muffler chop will work on my stock exhaust. Total project cost is a case of beer so its kinda in my budget...
Thanks in advance guys!

Straight piping the muffled will make it louder but not as loud as also deleteing the kitty. You woun't throw a code.and it will not produce any more smoke than you already do. No real performance gains but it should lower egts a little. Are you still under warranty? Depending on your dealer they might not honor it, if they are really buttheads.
Hope you and your buddy enjoy the beer!!

dang thanks for the quick response. So we should chop the Catylitic Converter and the muffler? No warranty so I dont have to deal with them honoring one. We will definately enjoy the beers, thats what college is for! haha

Any other inputs would be great thanks guys!

It depends on how you feel about federal emmision laws! Thiers talk about putting stricker emmision laws on diesels, I straight piped my cat but left the muffler. Then on the cat I welded on the pipe expanders so if the laws change I can slide off the straight pipe and slide on the cat.
Deleting cat will make it louder and lower egts a little more.
Now go get the beer and get busy!

I'd delete both. and you wont have to worry about it hurting anything an there are no sensors to worry about.

To each his own...
but I wouldn't remove the cat... IF Caught , can be $10K federal fine...
and with obuma & congress spending like drunken sailors, they will be grabbing for taxes!

and droning and loud has always bothered me and the girls...

I went to Napa (or blackcloud diesel) and got a Walker BTM for < $60...
200 degree lower egt's, nice, not too loud rumble and no drone...

good luck !

Your turbo will whistle louder, especially if it's a '03-early '04 build.

yeah obama is gonna be takin things to a hole new extreme, I love when people are like man I had no idea he was plannin all this when I voted for him... then I look at them and ask well did you read his stance on any of the major issues and how he intends to handle policy both foreign and domestic or did ya just vote for him because he was "the cool guy"
I hear what your sayin I like the rumble alot and I bought the truck used so if it came down to it I would back peddle and say i came that way... lol Thanks for the input and I appreciate it, its nice to know all of my options and thats super inexspensive too!

I have had no Cat for 5 years. No problems with any of it. Looks like you have an 03. It will whistle like an f-18 waiting for takeoff. Straight piped it will sound like a big block rumbling. If you do mostly city driving its ok, but you will not like it on a long drive. Its freakin loud. I straight pipe mine every so often, and like it for a month or two, then swap back. I would suggest a nice straight cut, two band clamps, and a piece of 3 1/2" pipe, maybe 20 bucks, then you can swap back in the muffler later if you want.
