Intake Elbows

I have an 03 SD with the "throttle body" built into the elbow. I have been told 05 up elbows are interchangeable with mine. So does this mean I can order an aftermarket elbow for an 05 & bolt it on? I'm looking at the accufab version. Going to have intercooler pipes & elbow hi-temp coated satin black once its apart. Anyone know which vendor has the best price on the accufab elbow?

You can just get a stock '05 elbow, and it will bolt right up.and just cable tie the wires.before you install you can paint or polish it and even tap it for ports. Your not gaining much HP,the '05 elbow will get rid of the throttle plate,if you even have one.

when I did mine thier was no throttle plate.I have the early '04 motor aka '03 motor.

I put an 05 elbow on mine. I polished mine but you could paint it, powdercoat it or whatever you want. The elbow I put on was given to me so I don't know what one costs from Ford but I doubt it is nearly as much as those being sold by the aftermarket and for what little gain is to be had from this mod, I can't see spending the big bucks for one.

Yes it will bolt right up, but you won't see any performance gains. I put the full Banks Technicooler setup on mine and didn't really notice any difference.

Or just leave it alone. Keep in mind, you're screwing into aluminum. When I installed my Banks kit, two of the four bolts stripped out before the torque spec and I ended up heli-coiling all four, not a fun Sunday before driving back to school.

If I remember, spec was 9 ft-lbs and they stripped around 6-7. It had never been apart, but the threads felt sloppy loose before I even started tightening. A machinist friend told me he uses helicoils in aluminum every time, even the first time assembling, because it just strips out so often and you shouldn't tighten into it more than once.

When replacing the Intercooler with upgraded piping and intake elbow on an 03-04, can you or should you replace it with the 05+ model kit?
