Question Replacing a Shattered Transfer Case

Don't ask me how he did it, but a friend of mine completely destroyed the transfer case in is '03 7.3 6-speed, as in scatter-blasted it into a bunch of pieces hanging under his truck . So now we're trying to find him a new one. From what I've been able to gather, looks like it should be a np271 (since it's a manual shift T-case. np273 would be ESOF), and the 6-speed has a different spline count on the input shaft than an auto, so the new one's gotta be from another 6-speed.

A couple sites seemed to suggest that all 99 and newer super duty np271's should interchange. Can anyone verify this? I'm finding a lot more 6.0 T-cases for sale so if they'd work, that would be nice. Also, is there any other stronger, preferably gear driven transfer case that would interchange. Or are there any upgrades that can make the np271 stronger? This truck is beaten on worse than a red headed stepchild, so we're thinking it's probably a good idea to go as strong as we can while we're doing this swap.

I haul hay with my trucks, I have a few with 271 T cases. I weigh like 40,000#'s GCVW when loaded heavy. I often back up steep driveway in 4 LOW and I have not broke a case yet, and I have been doing this for 15 years.

Like Moose99psd said, the 271 is pretty damn strong WTF did he do??

IMHO the 271 planetary low range should be stronger then a gear on gear reduction like a 205, I know the gear on gear is stronger then the chain when it comes to putting power to the front drive

Still haven't gotten the full story yet, but from what I can gather: he was really winding on it in 4hi Low gear with a load of firewood in the back trying to climb out a steep slick clay road. The truck has a little over 100k on it, a 50 horse chip, and 37" tires. This truck gets run through these kinds of situations pretty regularly, and before now has only blown out a hub and outer axle shaft on the front, and suffered a pretty good amount of body damage over the last few years he's had it.

I need to talk to him about getting an atlas, but he might not go for it being over $2000.

I've found 2 6-speed manual shift T-cases locally, a '99 and an '04. I've read that the 99's had issues with the shift forks, so we'll probably avoid one of those. The other was behind a 6.0, so if anyone can verify if that will work behind his 7.3 that would be awesome. It's also the cheapest one I've found.

We'll hopefully get the truck up to my shop by next weekend and pull it out. I'll post some pics when we do. It's pretty epic.
