Question can anyone help with a 5.4 triton???

My dad has a 2000 ford excursion and it is sounding like the rod is knocking. We had someone tell us that if its a sohc then its gonna be harder to fix. i dont know how to tell if it is a sohc,i was told it has to do with the 8 digit of your vin number.... but if anyone has any info on what to do or where to start on fixing it i would greatly appreciatie it

It's not a Navigator so it's a SOHC.

All the 5.4's were SOHC expect the for the Navi's being DOHC. Make sure to find where the noise is coming from too. I have heard more noises in the timing chain area, either being guide bars or tensioners. Not too much base engine problems. Any misfires? You might be able to unplug injectors one at a time also to pinpoint which cylinder is culprit (maybe)

Timing chains (especially if the engine were rotated backwards), exhaust studs broken and collapsed "lifters" can all sound like a rod knock.

Honestly, I have never seen a stock 4.6L/5.4L with a serious bearing problem and there are over a million on the roads.
