Glow plug relay doesn't work sometimes

sometimes when I start my truck cold, my glow plug relay will not turn on to heat the glow plugs. I usually cycle the key a few times till I see the "wait to start" light dim a little telling my the relay has clicked. Once that happens I wait for the light and the truck fires up. Could this be a bad relay ground or a bad signal from the PCM?

Could easily be a bad relay. They can get a burnt spot on the disc inside that doesn't arc the current properly.

A freind of mine had the same problem the heads up display tells the pcm the outside tempature, that controls the glow plug on time. if you have heads up diplay that does not work, they are rebuildable.

Well the Glow plug relay is only a few months old. I will have to look into the heads up display.

You can tell if the relay is working, you'll see the amp meter drop from 12 to 8 when turning the key to the start position without hitting the starter. If it only drops to like 10 amps, you're not getting power out of the relay to the plugs. I just went through this in Novmber of all things, relay only had 3k miles on it and was bad....good luck

Well I pulled it in the shop after work tonite and tried checking some things out with the test light but it wouldn't act up...go figure. So I removed the GPR and cleaned the out of the ground surface which touches the relay. We'll see what happens tommarow.

Do Not replace with a stock relay, order a Stancor 902 relay, 12V 200A continuous duty. about $52 from either mouser or alled elec. the standard relay is only intermitent use and will not last. I replaced mine with a 250A severe duty relay.

I had a Stancor.

It lasted less than 12 months.

I had the Napa GPR 109 and it lasted less than 6 months.

I went back with the International part # since it's cheaper than the other two.

I have not tested it or am not sure on the Ford but a lot of circuits that are PCM controled, are designed to run at a low amperage and problems can happen when a larger draw activation circuit is used. Just a thought!
