OBS Electronic Monitor

Quick question,

Is there an electronic monitor that will work on an OBS '96 stroker? Basically, something similiar to an Edge Insight, Bullydog Monitor, etc. that has the ability to monitor RPM, MPH, maybe a pyro, and potentially other parameters. Thanks.

No, I'm looking for more of a small sized option like the edge, bullydog outlook, or ultragauge - something small and stays in the vehicle.

Go with an Aeroforce Scangauge. (not the cheap rectangle scan gauge ones)

I know a LOT of people that own the original scangauge (www.scangauge.com) that are extremely pleased with it. I looked at both and there is no way I will pay way more for fewer parameters on the display. Sure the aeroforce is "cooler" in that it looks like a real old-time round gauge but where are you going to mount that anyway? Buy a pod for it plus pay more for the "gauge", not me.

But are the '96 diesels OBDII compliant? I know '96 gassers were mandated to be compliant but the sticker on the valve cover says OBDII exempt. So, will a scangauge work on an OBS? Reason I ask is I have an Ultragauge, http://www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm, and it doesn't seem to work on the '96. Thanks for any info.

My 95 E350 is OBDII compliant so your 96 should be as well.....

I've read where there are codes you can enter that will monitor more and more items on the 7.3 with the inexpensive scan gauge, but I haven't seen where it can monitor everything, read all the engine codes, as well as buzz test the injectors or perform a cylinder contribution test. I don't really care about "cool". I was going for functional when I got mine.

Your 7.3 diesel was designed by International as a medium duty truck engine, and is therefore not OBDII compliant. The truck is OBDII, and you can pull generic OBDII codes, but you cannot pull the engine specific codes or information. The free scans at the auto parts stores don't work for your engine either since the inexpensive code readers cannot read the 7.3 engine codes.

That's not the full story and definately misleading. Yes the engine was designed by Navistar and used as a MD truck engine AS WELL as a LD Truck engine in Fords. The ECM is a FORD ECM and is OBD-II compliant, in fact, it was the FIRST engine in a pickup that was.

That is not a compliance issue, but one of being a diesel with many fewer sensors and less complex emissions monitoring than gasoline engines. If the store scanners won't work it is the scanner hardware/software that is the problem, not that the truck/engine is not OBD-II compliant.

You've lost me. So if I get an OBDII scanner from any parts store for under $50 that says "works on all 96 and up", but it doesn't read the diesel codes on my engine, you're saying it's a hardware/software problem? If it's designed to work on all OBDII vehicles, and you're claiming the 7.3 is OBDII compliant, then why won't these scanners work on the 7.3 engine codes?

It can't be because we have fewer sensors or a less complicated emissions system. That would mean it would read our stuff, plus so much more. Why has the $350 AE scanner been so popular and recommended here for so many years to read codes and do diagnostics on the 7.3 if any OBDII scanner is supposed to work just as well?
