Insulation on Intercooler tube?

Anyone remove the insulation from the intake side boost tube? If so how hard was it, and what did it take to get the glue crap off? Also, did you paint the tube or polish it? If you painted it what brand of paint works best?

I know this is a lot of questions for one post, but I'm sure you guys can handle it.

Oh, one more thing. Will the duplicolor Meatalcast paint work for this project?

Thanks,
Will-

Good question. My early 99 didn't come with insulated CAC tubes...but I'd be interested in hearing about the paint as well. I know that powdercoating is probably preferred...but will a paint work as well.

The best way to do the project is:
1. You need to get the "tin foil" stuff off kinda like skinnin a deer or what ever your flavor of game, use a putty knife or razor knife and seperate the tin foil and insulation from the pipe

2. Spray the pipe down with NAPA decal and paint remover or gasket remover, let it sit for a while......then use a preasure washer to blast the glue off, or use a scotch pad and scrub it off....preasure washer is easier

3. Wipe down with MEK (Methol Ethol Ketone) or Acetone to remove any Residue then with paint thinner and paint with your choice of paints, I just left mine plain to match the other side.

You can paint he tubes after you prep them like mentioned. I painted both of mine about 2 yrs ago and they are holding up fine!! I used regular automotive paint but I suggest a high temp clear coat!!! other than that, it's pretty easy!!! Tape the ends up so that ya dont get any paint inside em though!!

Question, I had heard that if you removed the foil you got extra turbo noise, is this true?

I saw it on this thread- http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4769

Is that true? If so i'll do it.

It was added by ford in the late 99's due to complants about noise, also why they changed turbos...

I just removed what I could pull off and then used a wire wheel on a grinder... took about 10 minutes. Painted mine red and will get them PC'ed at some time. Paint works fine thou...
