My fuel tank is leaking diesel or is it??

I filled up the other day as usual and went in to pay. When I come out I see fuel spilling from my fuel tank. It was coming from the top and steadily flowin down the side of the tank. Well, I drove home and by the time I parked it didnt leak anymore. i tracked it down to some sort of hose towards the front of tha tank on the top. It's not the feed or return line as I removed the bed and checke those. Its further up toward the front of the tank. anyone know what that hose is for?? Was this something normal that might have happened for some particular reason?? I have to waste the fuel first befor I can drop the tank to check any more. Thanx for any info.

sounds like you are describing the vent hose, only diesel vehicles have a vented fuel tank.
