Rought Idle

when i first start my truck, cold or warm. it has a very rough idle and puffs out black smoke when it it does it. it goes from like 200rpm to about 600. it keeps juming like that till i rev it up then it smooths out. what could be the problem?
thanks again

Fuzzy, you are not having much luck lately! How about you ship that truck down here and I'll make it my new drag rig? :

My first thought would be

1...glow plugs. cylinders not warming up enough prior to start

2...injector problems.

3...iffy fuel. Where are you at level wise?

you may have a high pressure oil problem? IE a bad injector or the ipr is week or dirty. do you have a scanner or someone to scan the truck when it does this? check for codes? If you can look at the data stream when its doing it, a weak or biased iprs % will jump up & down alot causing a lopy idel.

the next few times you start the truck, i want you to fixate on the oil pressure gauage. The moment it starts, I want you to count the seconds until the guage pops up. For reference...i count the seconds as...."one thousand one, one thousand two...."

Once you get a second count...post the results and I'll get back to you.
