Straight Pipe Vs Muffler

I've got a 97 F250 and am looking around for a replacement downpipe & exhaust.

However, me thinks I'd like to go with a 4" exhaust without a kitty or muffler, but was wondering what difference a muffler would make if any in the system before making any changes.

Not to mention I need to figure out what downpipe I want to get anyway:shrug:

So, other than sound (and I understand it's not much louder) is there anything to gain or loose from running a exhaust without a muffler?

For a brief time I ran w/o a muffler and although it wasn't much louder in terms of overall decibel level, there was an unpleasant tone to the exhaust sound so that's when I had a Walker BTM installed. The BTM seemed to knock out most of the higher-pitched frequencies and that made it a lot more pleasant to drive on the highway since it didn't drone so badly. The very small baffles in the MBRP muffler I've got now do stick into the exhaust stream a bit so they reduce the interior cross-section of the pipe, but since the reduction of in-cab sound is quite dramatic, I'm willing to live with the restriction.

A completely straight pipe will have a slight "blab" to it, I don't really like it. But most do. With the kitty, it sound's about the same

I replaced the muffler and cat with a straight pipe 1 1/2 years ago and I love it. I haven't really noticed any drone or other noises. I replace my down pipe with one I found on ebay. I can't remember how much I paid but it wasn't much. There is a good article in the tech section on how to remove the old down pipe, read it first. It'll save you a bunch of time. Trust me I know from experience.
