Stuck glow plug!!!

Again, nothing for me can be easy. After jackin around under the hood putting my new turbo on, I was just about ready to fire it up. I had 2 glow plugs bad, plus I needed to take the back ones out to blow the fuel/oil out of the cylinders after installing the injectors. Got to the front drivers side glow plug and started loosining it and it felt kinda funny. Spun kinda hard 1/2 way out then I could get it with my fingers. No big deal. I thought. When I reached down to pull it out, the outer part that threads in the head came out, but the center of the glow plug is stuck or melted in the head. Anyone have this before??? Know any ways to get it out??? Need help bad!!

Unhappy

Jesus dude, that sucks. I'm sorry.

I was gonna say soak the piss out of it with penetrant, and work it in and out to loosen it up, but if the threaded part came out and the shaft part is still in there.....

I would try crank it over and see if it would push that part out with compression. Even to the point of putting a tiny bit of oil in that cylinder and blowing it back out.
Not sure how smart or safe that is, but it would beat pulling the head. :bricks

Happened to me on my IDI. If you can get a grip on it w/ vise-grips, then use alot of pentrating spray and try to twist it side to side.

It may or may not get blow out if you crank it up, mine didn't. I've heard it will make a nice hole in the hood, so atleast put a 2x or something above it before turning it over.

I never thought about penetrating oil....I just wonder if its stuck or melted though. This freakin sucks....just my luck. I can get vice grips on it but I dont have any penetrating oil. I guess I'll go get some PB Blaster and let er soak for a while.

Yeah, PB Blaster is good stuff.
If you can get vice grips on it, THAT IS GOOD. Don't lose hope.

Soak it down and slowly twist it, and soak some more. If you take your time and go slow you should get it.

I need to get a smaller pair of vice grips. The ones I have give me limited movement in between the rocker assembly and the top of the head. I might even have to take the rocker off the one side and the push rod out.

+1 on the PB Blaster, that's what I used also.

I have a pair of needle nose vise-grips that worked really well. Good luck, it's more than likely carbon build up around the tip (if it's the original GP). Mushrooming usually only happens w/ cheaper replacement GP's

If you will put some PB Blaster on it tonight you should be able to get it out fairly easy tomorrow.

I generally tap them back in a little with a hammer and punch so it will free it up around the element so the PB can soak past faster.

Set of needle nose visegrips tomorrow and you should be good to go.

Good Luck,
Darrell

Man you just cant catch a break on this deal.

If you want to replace a few of your glow plugs I have 7 of them out of my truck with 115,000 miles. One went bad and burnt up a glow plug harness a while back and I replaced them all.

Let me know and I'll send them to you, heck I might even pay the shipping if it isn't too much.

Keep marching on I am sure it will be worth all the trouble in the end.
