I am fairly certain that the late '80s to mid '90s Ford diesels used a fake gauge. The oil gauge reads the same all the time, either somewhere in the "Normal" range, or zero.
I do not know when they switched to full-function oil pressure gauges for the diesel, I know they never did on the gas engines.
