Somebody who knows turbos please HELP!

Hi all, ive got a late 99 powerjoke the turbo is goin out in an i need help on what to do. Should i get it rebuilt or go buy an aftermarket? I dont have a lot to spend but since the stoker gave out gives me a good excuse to get a reliable aftermarket turbo. What are some of the best, most RELIABLE brands, and what are they gonna set me back? $$$

Also, what else do I have to do to my truck if I put an aftermarket turbo on???

How much money do you have to spend? Aftermarket is going to be in the $1400 range minimum.

'96 F-250 Extended Cab, GT'S injectors, GT'S intercooler install kit, custom turbo kit with a little HX40, Swamp's BIGEST oil.

You could go with a drop in Turbonetics for about $1200 for the turbo, but your going to need a Pedistal, up pipes, Y pipe, Manifolds (intake)... Total cost for new parts could put you about $1600. If you found a few used parts I bet you could do it for about $1400

JOE,

He said "Late model '99" - if that's the case, he doesn't need all that other stuff. Just a drop-in turbo.

laugh :thanks:

DUHHHHHHHH Missed that... Well then your options are wide open... TN drop in is a great option, as is the GTP-38r... I will say this, I had extream surge with my 38r. I just got it back from Garret ( a new turbo, I guess they changed the compressor housing but I have not had time to look at it yet), but it took THREE MONTHS!

TN is about $1200-1300...
GTP-38r is about $1300-1500...

Both are good turbos, but I am a little warry of sending anyone to the BB until I have a chance to try there new housing.

He says he has a "late 99", shouldn't need anything else to bolt it in.

I would look at the turbonetics or Garrett ball bearing depending on where you're headed for performance.

If you get the ported compressor housing from dieselsite, you shouldn't have any surge issues with that on it, and the Garrett is a great turbo.

The Turbonetics/HTPS, etc is also a great turbo, and probably a good bit cheaper.
