Need some help from all you 7.3 guy's

I have a frien that just bought a 2000 f450 flat bed automatic. It has 89 k miles on it.I believe there is something wrong with it. It takes four to five seconds to spool up and smokes like crazy. It belonged to a construction company that went out of buisness. It shows no sighn of ever having any work done to it. Is this normal?

If it takes an honest 4-5 seconds, then something is definetly wrong. I would first check out the turbo, wiggle the impeller shaft, there should a very minut amount of play in it. Is it black smoke or grey/white?

I checked the turbo it has no slack in it. it's black smoke. I timed it and at full throttle it takes a true 4 seconds on flat ground. The fuel responce is quick, its like it isn't getting any air. i checked all the boost toobs and sleves and no sighn of any probles anywhere. I dont know what it could be.

Yeah, the one that was in it was nasty so i replaced it with a factory air filter. Does the same thing, no difference. I checked the codes at a friends shop and it's not throwing any. Is there anything that could be unpluged that would not show up?

Have you changes all the fluids and filters in it. Some times something as that can make a change. If they were running tight on money prior to going under, that may have been one of the things they let slide a little.

No but i checked all the fluids, the oil looked good. the trans was a little low but we topped it off. I might call him and change the oil just to make sure. Thanks

Yeah, sometimes it is amazing how much difference changing all the fluids and filters can make in a truck that is new to you. And not know the last changes on all of these, it gives you a good starting point for the future. Should be done any way when you buy a new used one.

Ok, thanks, but do you think the oil will make that much of a difference?
