Question Up pipe fell out

I pulled the left side exhaust manifold off of my truck today because it was leaking at the head. I noticed that the up pipe would really move around a bunch and pretty soon it just fell out in my hand.

What should I do?
It doesn't look like it was leaking much at all around the top connection, just a very minor amount of soot.
I can get it back up in there but do you think it will seal? I am really needing my truck this weekend so I'm kinda looking for a quick fix.

Pipe just slipped out of the donut. If you can reach up and align the donut to get the pipe back up through, it should be good to go.

Put some duct tape on to hold the pipe up until the up pipe flange is back on the manifold...

Is this normal?

Is it possible to get to the bolts at the top of the up pipe without pulling the transmission?

It is possible, but it does take some time and manuevering. Those 'donuts' are notorious for all sorts of problems.

With a nice little set of 1/4” swivels and a long extension it can be done but it’s a bear! If it fell out chances are the donut in the right position will let it back up.

We called Hypermax the other day about the small Ford donuts that don’t fit good. (loose and thin) Up pipe id is 1.9” to 2.0”.. They said go to NAPA, find some and trim to fit. I had a box full of of GM donuts and cleaned some out with the die grinder to fit nice and snug. I also safety wired the top flange (donut) bolts before the motor went in. Never seize compound on the donut helps distort it to a tight fit.

After a week no soot tracks on the up pipes yet..:

if it fell out surte it will go back in but it will leak even if there is no soot its leaking and leaks there will cause a drop in boost the best fix is to replace those junk donut pipes with the bellows kit now available I have posted the part numbers by eng serial number on a few posts here already .. Navistar numbers that is

Doc,

Is there any chance to get a pict of the Navistar bellows kit? I might get one to play with and try to adapt to the Hypermax H2 turbo y..

Lowboy, you don't seem to be afraid of doing the work judging from the fuel system thread. I cut the pipes and welded in the belows and then but flanges to bolt up to the hypermax exhaust Y. Something like whats on page 37. http://www.spdexhaust.com/pdfs/07_B%26W_Low_Res.pdf

Just get yourself a new donut and slather it with plain ol' antisieze. You'll most likely never have to worry about them again. But if the top of the up pipe is messed up from rubbing on the old donut then you might be needing to replace the pipe as well to get it to reseal properly.
