Block heater problem

Every time I plug it in, it trips the circuit on my GFI wall plug.
Is there a common problem with these things? I've tried different extension cords too.
Any help is appreciated.

Check the plug on the truck. The plug that goes into the extension cord. These things just get beat hanging out there in the wind, and there might be short there. I had mine short on that plug...and it melted to the extension cord.

You can see here how I re-wired mine:

It has a short in it, pull the plug off of the block and inspect it. Also double check the wiring going to the front of the truck. other than that the block heater it's self may have a short.

Thanx for the response.
I'm going to replace the end of the plug, hopefully that will do the trick.

I had this problem and it ended up being a little road salt on the plug. Bought some electric contact cleaner from the autoparts store, sprayed the plug, let it dry and plugged it in and it didn't trip the GFI anymore. Just some food for thought before you cut the end of to replace the plug.

Keep a close eye on it.
when I bought my truck 4 months ago... i decided to plug it in, this was on the second night of owning the truck.

my wife woke me up screaming at 1:30 am. there was flames rolling up around my bumper.

the wire had a short and somehow heated up the bumper and melted the plate holder and the entire plastic skirt off the bumper.

I had a 2 foot diameter puddle of plastic in my driveway.

luckily it didnt melt the grille at all.

I ran out there just in time with a fire extinguisher.

the dealer fixed it.
