Hard start after cold night?

I have a 02 7.3PSD that I use for work in Nor Cal. The truck starts fine at 2,000ft after a 20-30* night, BUT when I'm above 4,000ft it dosen't want to start for the first time of the day. I dont know why the higher elevation would have much to do with it, but it's the only thing that changes.

Any thoughts?

huh? maybe the glow plugs or harness. it prolly wouldn't be that if it is for sure the elevation that does it.

You might want to check and make sure BOTH batteries are good. Sometimes the engine will turn over fine but not get the glow plugs warm enough.

It never wants to start for the first time over night above 4,000ft (when it's cold), but maybe it just gets colder at night..? No mater where I am it's about 30* out when I go to work, maybe the higher elevation just gets that much colder at night???

How cold dose it have to be before these trucks start to have issues with cold start? Should I get a block heater?

I will check them for sure. Dose one start the truck and the other run everything else?

Assuning your batteries and glow plug system are operating correctly Ford says that you do not need to plug in till it gets below 0 F. I usually try to plug mine in around 20-25.

The GPs are controlled by coolant temperature and believe it or not, barometric pressure.

Why? Diesels require heat from the compression to ignite the fuel. As altitude increases barometric (atmospheric) pressure decreases, so you make LESS heat in the cylinder because you are compressing less air mass into the same space.

You may have a BARO sensor that is not working correctly, your symptoms sure point in that direction.

So it would make sence then that it will start after several cranking attempts, because there is heat built from this....?
