swap 4r100 for 5r100?

I have a 2002 F-350 as seen in my sig, I am wondering if anyone can tell me if it is possible to replace my stock 4r100 with a 5r100 the reason I ask is cause my tranny has about 147k miles on it and is starting to show some significant signs of wear, and i have access to a 5r100 with a little less than 65k miles on it, from a 2005 F-350 that my buddy totalled.

Thanks,
Chris

If I remember right from a thread I started a few months ago, you would need some kind of extra controller. Seems like I remember being told that there are two fourth gears in the 5r100 and depending on situation it will use one or the other. I obviously am not completely sure what I am talking about, but somebody that does knows better will chime in soon.

well the 5 speed auto (torq shift) has a 3.11 1st gear 2.20 2nd 1.54 3rd 1.0 4th and .71 5th the 4r100, 4 speed auto is 2.71 first 1.54 2nd 1.0 3rd and .71 5th. you need to use the ATS standalone tranny ecu setup to run the torq shift, im not sure what they have come up with for adapters yet tho.

So ATS has a controller that will allow you to run the torqshift on other motors??

Just get a built 4R100. It would probably be the same amount of money to switch to the 5R110 and you will have a much, much stronger tranny.

early 99 with some stuff on it

The correct ratios:

1st - 3.11:1
2nd - 2.2:1
3rd - 1.54:1
4th - 1:1
5th - 0.71:1

I would agree, the controller alone will probably run about $1000 (that's about what the PCS controller runs anyway), then add adapters and the rest. A good built tranny will cost a total of $4500 complete, and the 4R100 is an all around better tranny than the 5R110 once built.
