you can modify your exaust back pressure valve to work just like a exaust brake. you can probably do it for under $10 if you just want a switch in the dash to turn it on. it sounds like a jet engine at higher RPM's  if its cold enough for mine to kick on in the morning I'll try and get a video.

if you are looking for the loud jake brake sound you hear on the big rigs you won't hear it. The exhaust brakes on these are just a flap that closes off the exhaust. It will sound like rushing air and that's about it.

I dont have a exhaust brake. I just have the stock exhaust back pressure valve still hooked up and a straight pipe. when the oil temp is below a certain temp it will close off to help the engine warm up faster.

it will sound basically the same if you modify it to make it a exhaust brake.

is that what that noise is? mine did it with the factory down pipe and turbo. when it made that jet noise it had no power what so ever. i hated it. i figured it was a warmup feature of some sort. my dads 02 doesn't do it though. factory everything haha well its got factory down pipe.

your dads was either broke, unhooked, or you just couldn't hear it through a stock muffler. I am almost certan all of the 7.3's had them.

I acually kind of like the way it sounds and am going to miss it when I upgrade turbos, but I have a couple of friends that are also annoied by it and have unplugged theres. to each is his own I guess

for those interested into makeing in into an exaust brake here is a writeup about it. http://www.thedieselstop.com/content...xhaust%20Brake
sorry I thought there was a writeup here on the garage but I couldent find it, this one is written pritty good though.
