DT444 vs DT 466?

I saw a bobtail the other day w/ a DT466 badge. I know that it's a straight 6, but how much bigger is it than the 7.3?

Does anyone have any specs on the two motors?

Is it possible to swap a 466?
Has anyone done it?

Just wondering.

There is a 97 in the video section that has a DT466 transplanted. I want to do this with my 78 ford. And maybe when my motor goes bad in my 97. It can be done with lots of work. Strokerin is putting one in his 74 ford. The DT466 is far more reliable and can be a mean *** motor

Well, 466 - 444 = 22, so the DT466 is 22CI bigger than the 7.3 Powerstroke. It's somewhere in the 7.6L range, cause a 460 is a 7.5, 454 is a 7.4, 444 is a 7.3. You get the idea.

I think the highest rated 466 that international has put out is around 300, but as stated above they can be turned way up: however depending on what you you get you may come into the same hp problems we have with the powerstroke because they started using the heui system in them in about 95 I think.

I think I have heard that to put them in a pickup you have to modify the firewall a little bet to get it in there

If I was going to do the swap I think I would try and get a DT530. they made them with a p-pump for about 4 or 5 years in the early 90's before they started using the heui system. The great thing about the 530 is I believe the external dimensions are identical to the 466

Thanks Pontiacross,

I was just curious about the idea.
It seems like we can dump 15k into our truck w/o blinking. (Injectors, big oil, ...)

It seems like that would be a cool swap.

almost like a 400 SBC vs a 350sbc let us know how that 530 swap goes... what pulling class would that beast end up in?

early '99 converted to late '99 F-350 dually, 4x4, 4 door, long bed, 6 speed. Midwest transmissions 05+ zf-6 transmission with their short throw shifter and SB clutch. Rosewood 180cc with 80% nozzles, Termy modded 17* HPOP, International bellowed up pipes, fs-2500, DP Tunes. A few other things here and there...
dually club member.. Why replace 5 tires when you can replace seven? I like my training wheels...

most of the big sanctions like dhra and ntpa require you to use a engine that originally came in a 1 ton or smaller truck so a 466 wouldn't be allowed to pull but i think there are some smaller sanctions that allow them to pull in a modified class.

It depends on what version of the DT466 you are talking about using as to what the factory HP was and how much it is capable of. The DT466E is not a good candidate for high performance applications.

The DT466 in it's later versions a very capable high horsepower engine. You'll want to find a late model in-line pumped engine. Stay away from the earlier rotary pump engines. The early engines were prone to rod issues and the rotary pump is just not capable of the amount of fuel you will want for big HP.

The DT466 are longer and taller than a T444E. If you are putting one into an OBS or SD you are either going to have to modify the firewall and run a dog house or you'll need to put the rad in the bed with some electric fans on it.
