Looking into a 7.3 need some advice

I have been looking at/test driving 6.0's for over a month and just can't seem to make a good deal.

Anyway I have found a very nice '02 2wd SC it is a clean a truck, I am going to test drive it and was wondering if there are some issues specific to the 7.3 that I should be looking at.

From what I have read the Auto trans/ Torq converter is somewhat of a weak point, This truck has a little over 100,000 mi, an on board tuner and upgraded exhuast, it was not a heavy hualer should I be worried?

Also how does the power compare to the 6.0 in stock form?

How much would it cost to get similar performance out the 7.3, Not looking to go crazy, but I really enjoyed driving the 6.0.

I have had several mechanics tell me to find a good '03 with the 7.3 and never get rid of it, I think I am going to take that advice!!

Thanks!

If you live in an area that gets snow, you might want to consider a 4x4.

I tossed around the idea of a 4wd, The last one I had I could count on 1 hand how many times I had to lock it in 4wd!

We don't get any snow in my area, I would get 4wd if snow was an issue though.

I will mainly be towing a 20' boat (and maybe a 25' boat in the future )about 100 miles a few times a week and want better mileage than my gasser is getting ( I calculated about 7mpgs) and it struggles to do that!!

Thanks for the replies, keep um coming.

About 100,000 miles, if the water pump hasn't been replaced yet it will probably bite the dust pretty soon, or the 6 that my family has had has hadthis happen. Some other problems that we have faced are, ball joints ( but every one has been 4x4), alternators, and u-joints in the driveline. If you are looking at adding performance to the truck you for sure need to look into the 7.3. The 6.0 (With added performance products) takes alot more money because the have alot of trouble with head gasket failure. If you will look in the 6.0 section you will notice the typical problems with guys trying to add performance products. The 7.3 is by far the best diesel motor Ford ever made if you are asking me. The rediculusly reliable motors that will make you proud to own, and reading more about them on TDG will only help, these guys know what their talking about and will help with anything that is giving you trouble. I agree with the 03 7.3 being the best one to look for too or an 02 - in 02 Ford reprogrammed the computer and gave the motor 35 more horse if I'm not mistakin'...the article was in Diesel Power Mag. Sorry for it being so long but I hope some of this helps.

On the hunt for a 7.3 preferably CC or Ext. Cab SB...Let me know of any deals.
