Question clicking Turbo

Hey guys I got a 95 Ford Dually with 90k and I was going up the grapevine(Los Angles to Bakerfield 6% grade) with 1100 pounds of cement and noted the turbo was making a awful clicking noise under load. Is it time to be rebuilt or the turbine fins got damaged by little debri. It really sound like a lose rocker arm but only makes the clicking sound under load.

If its making any other sound but that wonderful whooshing whine, it needs to be checked. With the turbo on the truck you can just disconnect the intake and exhaust, inspect the condition of the wheels on both sides, looking for raggedy chipped edges on the fins or cracks, ect... And check the shaft play/wheel clearance by physically wiggling the shaft around. Grab the compressor (Intake) Wheel nut and gently push/pull. There should be very little, if any, movement. Then try wiggling it up and down. Again, VERY little play, if any, should exist. Also, look for impact/scrape marks on the compressor housing, and exhaust housing. Bottom line is, if theres a problem with the shaft bushings or wheels, it will be quite apparent. There may be other factors as well, but usually clicking/buzzing/vibrating, ect has to do with the wheel/shaft assembly, in my experience. After all, it is the only moving part of the turbo, and is a high stress component. Perhaps someone else can chime in with more info if Ive missed something.

"MOby" The big white bio-burning 03 7.3 4x4. 6637, straight piped stock exhaust, and a new "secret" blend of Haul asBLEEPsing mods and upgrades. Suffice to say, its still not the fastest, but its quick enough to worry lots!

when my original turbo went it was making a ticking sound under load so you may indeed be looking at a rebuild soon. I has excessive play when I inspected it. I went with a GTP38R to replace it and while it lasted it was a ggod turbo but if I had it to do all over again I would have gone with something rebuildable as the GTP38R didn't last very long. I know where you can get a rebuild kit and for around $100.00 and send it to the guy to have it balanced. If you want to know where pm me. Gene
