Oil level drops while driving

Hey everyone,
When I fire up my 2000 excursion the oil level will show just fine, with the oil light off. After I have been driving for a little while, the gauge with drop to 0 and the oil light will come on.
I have been having electrical issues and was thinking it might be related to that, or maybe the sensor itself is going bad.
My brother in law was thinking that the gauge measures oil pressure and not level, and that it might be my oil pump is not working.
Anyone gone through this before? Any thoughts?

your BIL is correct that the mechanical idiot light comes on based on oil pressure and the sensor is on top of the HPOP.

OK, a little update.
Today it did the same thing, then I left the excursion idling for a while, and the oil pressure came back up.
So I drove around watching it. When I hit the road and started speeding up, the gauge would start to drop slowly, then I would take my foot off the pedal and the gauge would go back up. I drove around for a little bit and it kept repeating this. The truck drives great. I am thinking the oil pump is starting to go. Does that happen?

first off your oil pressure guage is a glorified idiot light. the guage sender toggles on/off at approx 6-7psi. the guage is calibrated to read around the middle of the guage after the sender grounds out the wire at around 6-7psi. this guage does not indicate actual oil pressure.

what you can do is remove the factory sender and screw in a mechanical guage and check actual pressure. I would assume the sender/sending unit is failing, these are quite notorius for failure. But for your piece of mind you might want to check the actual oil pressure with a "real" guage.

What is the sending unit? is that different than the sensor?

Some people call the sending unit/oil pressure switch a sensor and thats fine, there is an oil temp sensor though. The sending unit you are looking for is on the top of the HPOP right in the front/middle of the engine and just in front of the fuel filter head. Look for a single wire round sensor with a hex flange, the wire color should be white with red stripe

So can I see an oil pressure sender that will actually indicate the oil pressure and connect it to the vehicle gauge? Rather than just an oil pressure switch.
Is there any benefit to this?
Is this what I would be looking for?

the ford guage will not work with a variable sender, what you found at o-reillys is for an aftermarket Autometer guage assy. If you wanted to see actual oil pressure you would need to buy a guage kit and install the whole thing.
