intermitent grind and pop in the front end

im having an intermitent grind and pop in the front end of my 99.5 F-250 it only does it every now and then and never when under power only does it when coasting or braking, it almost sounds like its on the front drivers side or passanger side or one side or the other like its kicking back and forth between wheels but only one at a time we pulled the drivers side wheel off today and the caliper pads looked good and in place. it just started doing it recently and me and my buddies are at a complete loss for whats happening.

Could be a couple of things.... bad 4x4 hub, bad wheel bearings, etc.

yea we thought about all those things but i dont think its the hub it really doesnt sound like a hub or bearing. the more i think about it it might be something to do with that dust shroud on the rotors, but im not ruling anything out. i guess ill have to tear down the pass. side later today and try to figure something out. if anyone else has anything i should look for or check or might have had anything like this happen any more advice would be great.

Does it sound like a tire rubbing? If so, I'm betting inner wheel bearing for $500, Trebek. It's a $30 fix and will take you an hour to replace both sides.

could anyone tell me where i might locate the inner wheel bearing and is it seperate from the part that bolts to the axle with studs? or a brief description of what i need to do to change the inner wheel bearing? but im wondering why if it were a bearing wouldnt it grind all the time? it only does it every now and then.

The axle shaft bearing is a torrington style bearing. Timken makes them, and their part number is B2110. Autozone sells it, part number B2110. If you can get it to make the noise again, put it into 4wd while its doing it and see if it goes away. If it does, that's most likely your problem.

If you buy the whole wheel hub assembly, one of these bearings is installed already. Ford will say that if the inner axle bearing goes out, you have to replace the entire wheel hub assembly. If you do, you'll spend around 400 bucks per side, instead of about 15, just for parts. This bearing does need to be pressed in. Anyone with a bottle jack press can do this pretty easily. Hope this helps

its almost like something is hanging up rather than gone bad it does it a few times on the way to the gas station 2 miles or so and it really sounds like thin metal hanging up on something spinning but we cant see anything hanging up.

Ford actually sells the inner bearings... its where I bought mine from. When I gave my parts guy the part #, he immediately knew what I was doing.
