Need some advice on trans

Hello all. My early 99 7.3 auto has started making a rattle at idle after warm up. The sound seems to be coming from the torque converter. I removed the dust sheild and all the bolts are tight and I couldnt see any cracks in the flex. If I idle the truck up the noise goes away and it lessens when I put it in gear. The trans shifts great and I havnt had any issues with it. What should I do? Thanks Seth

If you catch it early enough just the converter, if you wait to long you may have to do the Trans as well. Pull the pan and see what’s in it first. If there is a lot of metal you may already gone too far.

You could replace the valve body since you'll have it out and the fluid drained anyway.

If you have the tools, there are some pump mods you could do.

Contact our resident Ford transmission vendor, Racer X for his suggestions.

Erly 99 and late 99 trucks were known for this to happen. I think part is due to the fact that the TC is so loose and the other thing i heard was it was a defective design. My truck does it too and it only has 57K on her. When she locks up the noise goes away. It don't slip or chatter at all so when it starts to do that then I will replace mine.

Prt, I plan on getting my parts from racer x, he has guided me on some transmissions in the past but I was able to fix them without ordering parts. I dont know which tc to purchase.

I've heard great things about the converter he specs.

I plan to have mine done by him (very soon, actually) since he's fairly close to me.

I put a Precision of New Hampton, Max low stall billet multi disk converter in my '00 F550 and i really like it. It cost about $525 shipped and I have had it in for 40k plus miles hauling hay (I weigh 40,000 # loaded) and horses and it is holding up fine. I have a friend who rebuilds all his trannys with Precision's converters and they hold up very well.

www.gopnh.com

They don't spend a ton $$$ sled pulling like ATS and others or run multi page adds in Diesel Power or other magazines. when you pay $1000 plus for a converter your most likely paying for full page adds in magazines and sled pulling trucks.
