Exhaust + idling..

Hi!

F-250, 7.3, 2002

Need some help, haven't really worked on/touched this truck before, I'm kind of new to the diesel engine..

Having two "problems",

First, when starting up and standing idling, it revs up to a higher "rev" after a little while, and stays there until I press the brake..

Second, when driving, it has a wheezing sound from the exhaust/the back until the engine gets warm..

Why, and what could I do to fix it? I don't have any problems with working on cars, I'm just new and a little unsure about this diesel truck this far.. I am so thankful for any help and suggestions!

Rik

The wheezing is normal ..it is the EBPV operating as it should. It is a device theat restricts the exhaust post Turbo in order to warm the engine faster. If it is working all is good. When they stick closed and start causing problems then you need to unplug the wires at the Turbo pedestal effectively disabeling it. Worst case scenario is removing it altogether. It is refered to as 'gutting the EBPV"

Wherever you are, it's still cool enough weather to make your truck go into cold weather operation.

High idle and the exhaust noise are normal. As mentioned, the exhaust wheezing is the EBPV (Exhaust BackPressure Valve). This is a butterfly valve located just before the downpipe. It closes off the exhaust to provide an artificial load on the engine, which helps to warm up the engine a little faster in cold weather.
