crankshaft endplay

on my early 99 with 284k
went to change my oil pump seal due to leakage, and found the cranksahft moving .100"
swapped the motor for another early 99 to get the truck on the road.
pulled the pan on the original, the rear of the thrust bearing is completely wore along with the crank, front of the bearing is fine. The journal side ahd some wear.
trans was replaced about 30k ago,
Ive put 10k on the truck in the past year.
was still running fine would not have even known it other than finding by accident.
what would have caused the wear?
should I worry about the new motor?

1996 psd 5speed 4x4 cc 8' bed, 3" body lift, 35's swamped, dp-tuner, intercooled, custom fuel system, no fan, and a few other goodies, 263k. 349.2hp sold

stock cept for duals. 260k sarted out as a 2wd xl work tk

Wear on the rear side of the thrust bearing is almost always from riding the clutch - that is not completely removing your foot from the clutch pedal, except for DURING a shift. This is also common on engines with manual transmissions operated in "stop and go" HEAVY traffic because you spend a lot of time feathering the clutch to creep ahead in traffic.

Other causes are incorrect clutch linkage adjustment (but you have a hydraulic clutch), incorrect Throw-out bearing (too thick) and binding TO bearing (hydraulic cylinder).
