Cool looking to buy a new truck need advice, mpg questions

I am looking to buy a truck to pull a 30ft travel trailer around 6k lbs. I am looking for anything between 95-05. Must be a crew cab and preferably an automatic(it will also serve as a spare vehicle and my wife can't drive stick... tried to teach her once but stopped while I still had hair left). Brand doesn't really matter but dependability does. I like the looks of the early 2000 Ford F250's and Dodge rams. I will probably only use it to pull the trailer and drive it now and them just to keep it up.(My current truck I've had for about 5 years and only put 15k mile on it). What should I look for as far as common problems and what are you guys getting for fuel economy, daily and while towing, with your trucks? Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

The 7.3L is pretty reliable. But If your aren't gonna tow much I'd look into a F-250 or 350 with the V-10, it's got plenty of power to tow. Only reason why I don't recommend a diesel is because they require constant upkeep. and not driven alot could cause issue's.

Diesel's like to be driven run hard etc. it wouldn't be practical for a diesel to sit until you want to drive it again.

MPG isn't really anything to sneeze at, it get's nothing more then a regular v8 would some pay sware by it. but personally there isn't much difference in gas miledge between a gas and diesel. maybe 1-2 MPG more. nothing big like mentioned before.

I average around 16-18 unloaded. I start the truck and let it run for 5 - 10 minutes every day before I go anywhere. I don't beat on it. I have the 6 speed but I believe the final gear ratios are the same as the 4Auto.

Tow a boat that is between 13 and 14.5k depending on fuel load. Get about 10-11 doing that.

EDIT - 2000 F350 Dually 4X4

I've got an 01 7.3 with 195k on the odometer and get 17 mpg unloaded on the highway. I also have an 03 with a v-10 25k on the odometer and I'm lucky to see 12 mpg on the highway. The only thing I do differently is change the fuel filter every 10k on the diesel otherwise the upkeep is about the same between the 2 trucks, I change the oil on both of them every 3-5k miles.

Garage
If you don't drive it much get the 6.0 most of us work on them more than we drive them.

If you do go for gas I have a 2005 Ram 2500 4X4 hemi with 155,000 miles on it now, I leave it run 8 hours a day, change the oil every 5-10k, brakes every 50k, and an occasional air filter, and one set of ball joints, an optima battery at 100k, and one heater core. It tows 6k often and has never had any repairs of any kind, ever. It always sees about 11.4mpg winter as it is shut off some, and 10.6mpg summer but is never shut off. It's a trusty rusty for sure!

AND YOU THOUGHT CARTER SUCKED

I have a 2002 F250, 7.3, auto, plainjane with 120K miles. It gets 17 unloaded and about 10-11 towing a 12K 5th wheel. Well maintained. Send me a PM if you want more info.

none

The 7.3 is a great motor, and in the best chassis for towin in my opinion, I would much rather tow a big trailer with a ford then my dodge lol

1996 CTD ex cab LB, 5 speed 4x4, LUK clutch, 370"s, fully built and bench flowed pump from TRE Diesel, timing at 17*, airdog 150, aem brute force intake pullin air through a schwitzer 65mm charger, and pushin it out a FBD 5 inch exhaust painted flat black, 6 in. MBRP tip

Waitin for install, ARP studs, 4 GSK, and added timing
